Shawn Murphy Wins RGPS Houston Main Event

Shawn Murphy put on a masterclass of poker and pure instincts at Champions Club Texas over the weekend, conquering a massive field of 538 entries to capture the 2026 RunGood Golden Expedition Houston $600 Main Event for $51,000. It was pure domination down the stretch for the Ohio native, who navigated six starting flights and outlasted the competition to secure the largest career score of his life by a wide margin, all while holding a beverage in one hand for much of the tournament.

Tournament Structure and Reaching the Guarantee

Champions Club Texas hosted a fantastic event that required all six starting flights to comfortably surpass the $250,000 guaranteed prize pool set forth by tournament staff. When the dust settled on Day 2, 49 players returned to the felt, each guaranteed a min-cash worth $1,150. The eliminations came fast and furious as the blinds ticked up every 30 minutes. Start-of-day chip leader Matthew Schumacher had a rough go of things early on, unable to regain traction before bowing out in 28th place. The final 27 players were redrawn to the final three tables, where heavyweights like RGPS ambassador Alexandra Loveless, Michael Murphy, Hayden Fortini, and Kimberly Stone were quickly sent to the payout desk.

Final Table Action and Deep-Stack Pressure

Once the action reached the final two tables, the remaining stacks grew significantly shallow with an average stack of less than 20 big blinds. This induced rapid eliminations, and the official final table was locked up within an hour. Two of the most accomplished players in the field—Drake Kemper and Gabriel Andrade—found themselves forced to the payout cage in the same hand after running into Murphy’s early final-table buzzsaw.

As the blinds continued to escalate, short stacks Srinivas Tottempudi, Jeremy Moore, and Flavio Palalon saw their chips dissipate. Heads-Up Battle of Experience vs. Youth

The stage was eventually set for a dramatic heads-up clash between two contrasting profiles: seasoned pro Shawn Murphy and 18-year-old phenom Grant Matatall. Matatall, staked by his father just months after turning 18, was playing in his very first live tournament Day 2 ever. Despite his youth, Matatall showed immense poise and skill.

However, Murphy’s veteran experience ultimately prevailed. In the decisive final hand, Matatall turned an open-ended straight draw and attempted a triple-barrel bluff after bricking out. Murphy sniffed out the play effortlessly, making a massive hero call with just ace-high to seal the victory and claim the $51,000 top prize.
