Poker legend Sammy Farha, best known for his runner-up finish to Chris Moneymaker in the 2003 WSOP Main Event, is at the center of a controversy following a physical altercation with a dealer at the Houston Social Cardroom. Surveillance footage obtained by PokerNews captures the heated exchange that occurred on October 22 during a $1/$3/$6 Pot-Limit Omaha game featuring a $15 button straddle.
The Incident at Houston Social
The confrontation began after a dispute over a hand. Doug Caillier, a veteran dealer with experience dating back to the 1990s World Series of Poker, had just awarded a significant pot following an all-in-and-call scenario. Farha, who was not involved in the hand, accused Caillier of improperly retrieving the losing player’s cards from the muck and exposing them. While the claim was disputed, the tension quickly escalated into a face-to-face confrontation.
The surveillance video, which contains no audio, shows Farha standing up from his seat and approaching Caillier, who was being relieved by another dealer. A floor manager attempted to intervene, but Farha bypassed him, pointing his finger and yelling at the dealer. The footage shows Farha extending his left arm and shoving Caillier in the chest area. A security guard immediately stepped in to separate the two, pushing Farha away from the dealer.
Aftermath and Allegations
Caillier reported that the altercation continued near the cashier’s cage, where the two exchanged further words. The dealer alleged that Farha shouted obscenities and made verbal threats throughout the ordeal. While the video appears to show a shove, Caillier claimed that Farha also attempted to slap him and struck him in the chest and stomach. Due to the incident, Caillier has been suspended from his position at the club and is not expected to return.
Farha was initially banned from the Houston Social Cardroom following the event, though he was reportedly spotted back inside the facility just one day later. This incident is not the first time the poker pro has faced such allegations; multiple players and dealers have noted a history of Farha berating staff, including a previous physical altercation at the Legends Poker Room in Houston several years ago.
