WPT Venetian Debuts Slide Dealing in US First

Posted by

The $5,000 World Poker Tour (WPT) Venetian Las Vegas Fall Championship is making history this week, becoming the first WPT event in the United States to implement the “slide dealing” technique. Running from Nov. 5-10 with a $2 million guaranteed prize pool, the tournament has brought a significant shift in floor operations that players are already noticing at the tables.

What is Slide Dealing?

Unlike the traditional “pitch” method, where dealers toss cards through the air to players, slide dealing requires the dealer to slide the hole cards across the felt directly to each participant. While this method is common in various international jurisdictions—and was recently featured at a WPT event in Sydney, Australia—it is a major departure from standard Las Vegas procedure. South Point was the first poker room in the city to adopt the practice earlier this year, but the Venetian is the first major Strip property to integrate it into a high-stakes WPT festival.

The primary motivation behind this transition is security. By sliding the cards, the bottom of the card remains obscured from view throughout the entire delivery process. In traditional pitching, a careless dealer or an observant player could potentially catch a glimpse of a card’s rank or suit while it is in flight. By eliminating the airtime, the casino significantly reduces the risk of accidental exposure or intentional cheating.

Tournament Action at the Venetian

The $2 million guaranteed event kicked off on Thursday, drawing a competitive field to the Venetian. Cherish Andrews emerged as the standout performer on Day 1a, bagging the chip lead among the 32 players who successfully navigated the opening flight. With 103 players entering the fray on the first day, the tournament is well on its way to meeting its ambitious guarantee. As players look to navigate the later stages of the event, those interested in sharpening their tournament approach should review ICM poker tournament strategy to ensure they are making the most of their stack during the bubble and final table play.

Day 1b is scheduled for Friday at 11:15 a.m. local time, with the final opening flight taking place on Saturday. The tournament will culminate in a final table that will be livestreamed on PokerGO, allowing fans worldwide to see the new dealing mechanics in action on the big stage. For those looking to practice their own skills in a high-quality environment, you can find soft cash games and tournament action by choosing to play on BetOnline Poker.

So far, the transition has been seamless. Reports from the floor indicate that the dealing has been smooth, with no significant complaints from the players regarding the change in pace or style. As the WPT continues to innovate, the success of this trial at the Venetian could signal a permanent shift in how major US tournaments are conducted in the future.
